Gore Canyon

Gore Canyon is a narrow gorge where the Colorado River cuts through steep rock walls near Kremmling. The river flows powerfully through this section, creating one of the most challenging waterways in the region.

A railroad line was constructed through the canyon in the mid-1800s, requiring significant engineering innovation to navigate the steep terrain. The track still runs through the gorge today, a testament to 19th-century construction methods.

Each August, Gore Canyon hosts a whitewater festival where skilled paddlers compete in races while spectators gather to watch the events.

You can see the canyon from the Colorado River Headwaters National Scenic Byway, which runs along the southern rim and provides viewing access. Stop at pullouts along the route to take in the full scale of the landscape.

The canyon contains some of the most technically difficult Class V rapids in Colorado, requiring years of paddling experience to navigate safely. These sections draw expert paddlers who seek the ultimate challenge.
