Windy Gap Reservoir, reservoir in Grand County, Colorado
Windy Gap Reservoir is a large manmade lake in Grand County, Colorado, that stores water from the Colorado River. The basin sits in open landscape with mountains in the background and connects to nearby Lake Granby through a pumping system.
The lake was created in 1985 by building a dam that flooded a meadow. The project sparked debate over environmental impacts, and later efforts began to restore the damaged river section downstream.
The reservoir was created by damming a meadow and now serves as a place where water management and wildlife protection meet. Visitors experience how the site balances human needs with preserving the natural habitat for local animals.
The site is easily accessible from US 40 with a signed parking lot, restrooms, and drinking fountains available. Access requires a valid wildlife area pass for visitors over 16 years old, and dogs are permitted only in the parking area.
River otters have been reintroduced to the area and are rarely visible, but attentive visitors might spot them swimming or along the shoreline on quiet days. The viewing site, opened in 1995, allows visitors to see white pelicans, which are uncommon elsewhere in the county.
