Shadow Mountain Lake, reservoir in Colorado
Shadow Mountain Lake is a reservoir in Grand County, Colorado, formed by damming the Colorado River and surrounded by forest and mountain peaks. The southern shore has a campground and two boat launches that give direct access to the water.
The lake was created when Shadow Mountain Dam was built to control the Colorado River and direct water to surrounding communities. Long before the dam, the surrounding forests were already being monitored for fire, as the Shadow Mountain Lookout from 1932 shows.
The name comes from the shadows cast by the surrounding mountain as the sun moves across the sky. People come here mostly to fish, paddle, and camp along the forested shore, drawn by the open water and the tree-covered hills around it.
The area is best reached by car, and parking for vehicles with trailers is available at both boat launches and the campground. Coming early in the day, especially on weekends, makes it easier to find a good spot before the lake gets busy.
The Shadow Mountain Lookout, a fire tower from 1932, can be reached by trail and offers views of the mountain range that are simply not possible from the water. The path up to it sees far fewer visitors than the lake itself, making it a good option for those who want a quiet walk above the tree line.
