Mesa Laboratory, Research structure in Boulder, US.
Mesa Laboratory is a seven-story research facility that combines large concrete surfaces with extensive glass walls to flood the interior with natural light. The open spaces flow between floors, creating bright work areas where researchers can see the mountain views from multiple levels.
The structure was designed in 1961 by architect I. M. Pei as his first major commission beyond traditional urban projects. This project proved he could reshape how scientific buildings are conceived and built.
The building merges design elements inspired by ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings with its modern research purpose, creating a visual dialogue with the surrounding landscape. This architectural language reflects how the site connects scientific work to the natural world around it.
Access to specific areas requires advance reservation, and guided tours operate during regular weekday business hours. It is best to arrange your visit ahead of time to secure a spot on a tour.
The concrete exterior was finished with a special bush-hammer technique that mimics the color and texture of the mountain rock surrounding it. This surface treatment makes the building appear as though it grew from the landscape itself.
