Tivoli Brewery Company
The Tivoli Brewery Company is a historic brewery in Denver, Colorado, located in the Auraria neighborhood and built in Italianate style in the 1880s. The building features solid brick walls, large windows, and original brewing equipment like copper kettles and a barrel lift that speak to its past as a working production facility.
The brewery was founded in the 1880s by German immigrant Moritz Sigi, who created a special beer called Buck Beer and utilized the city's first artesian well for water. After Sigi's death, John Good took over and renamed it after the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, transforming it into one of Denver's largest breweries before it closed in 1969 after over 80 years of operation.
The building takes its name from the famous Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, reflecting the connection between local brewers and European traditions. Visitors can still sense how this place brought together generations of workers and neighbors, fostering a shared sense of community pride.
The site is located near downtown Denver and is easy to walk to, with parking available nearby. The building now serves as part of a university campus housing a student union, so visitors should check limited hours ahead and plan in advance for any upcoming tours or events.
The building was converted into a shopping center in the 1980s and later housed a movie theater that screened the Denver Film Festival for several years. Since 2012, a new brewery operates inside the same historic building, producing German-style beers like Helles Lager and helping teach students about brewing traditions.
