Statue of Christopher Columbus, Bronze monument in Civic Center Park, Denver, United States
The Statue of Christopher Columbus was a bronze sculpture in Civic Center Park featuring a human figure with four sides and circular rings representing directions across the globe. The work stood on a concrete base and measured approximately 15 feet (4.5 meters) in height.
The sculpture was created in 1970 by Denver artist William F. Joseph and installed at Civic Center Park in 1975 with a formal dedication ceremony. It was originally known under a different title before later being dedicated to the explorer.
The statue remained a center of public discourse regarding historical representation until its removal during social justice demonstrations in June 2020.
The location was easily accessible on foot from downtown Denver and sat within a busy public park with multiple walkways and seating areas. Visitors should know that the work was removed in 2020 and now exists only as a historical record in photographic collections.
The artwork was originally conceived as 'Man of All Nations' and received its later name through the support of Italian immigrants in Denver. This dual identity of the work reflects how public monuments can shift their meaning and naming over time.
