Paramount Theatre, Art Deco movie theater in Denver, United States

The Paramount Theatre is a movie house in downtown Denver featuring distinctive architectural details characteristic of 1930s design. The geometric patterns and decorative elements throughout its interior and exterior showcase the Art Deco style that defined entertainment venues of that era.

The Paramount opened in 1930 as a movie theatre of the Paramount-Publix Theatre Circuit, the exhibition arm of Paramount Pictures. Its auditorium was designed by the Chicago firm Rapp and Rapp, with decorations by Vincent Mondo and murals by Louis Grell. The entrance was cut through an existing office building at 519 16th Street; the Glenarm Place building that now serves as the main entrance was designed by Temple H. Buell. By 1978 it was Denver's last movie palace, hosting Denver Opera Company's Madama Butterfly that October; it joined the National Register in 1980 and became a city landmark in 1988.

The Wurlitzer organ, opus 2122 of the Publix#1 style, was installed on July 23, 1930, and is one of two remaining twin-console Wurlitzers in the United States, the other at Radio City Music Hall. It appears on many Denver cultural tours. In October 1978 the Denver Opera Company staged Madama Butterfly here, and in 1996 Sinbad filmed his HBO special "Son of a Preacher Man" on this stage.

The main entrance is now on Glenarm Place, a short walk from the 16th Street Mall; the original 1930 entry was a lobby cut through to 519 16th Street. The auditorium seats 1,870, so sightlines and sound differ from arena shows. The Wurlitzer organ appears on several Denver cultural tours, and the building is a city landmark listed on the National Register since 1980.

The Glenarm Place facade that now serves as the main entrance was designed by local architect Temple H. Buell, not by Rapp and Rapp, the Chicago firm behind the theatre itself. Buell's three-story office block is a modernized Art Deco reading of the Gothic style, built largely of cast concrete and white terra cotta.
