The facility is a correctional institution for male offenders in Deer Lodge, Powell County, Montana. It consists of several housing units divided by security levels and surrounded by high concrete walls.
The institution opened in 1871 as Montana Territorial Prison and stood in downtown Deer Lodge for over a century. It moved to the present site in 1979 when the original buildings could no longer accommodate growing needs.
The facility implements rehabilitation programs focused on education, vocational training, and behavioral management to prepare inmates for their return to Montana communities.
The site is located on Conley Lake Road outside the town center and is not open to casual visitors. Anyone wishing to visit an inmate must obtain prior approval and follow regulations regarding dress and permitted items.
Between 1890 and 1921 Frank Conley served as warden and organized inmates to work on public projects across the region. These assignments included building roads and harvesting timber in the surrounding Montana forests.
