McCarthey Athletic Center, basketball arena at Gonzaga University
McCarthey Athletic Center is a multipurpose indoor facility on Gonzaga University's campus in Spokane, seating about 6,000 people. The steeply angled bleachers bring fans close to the court, and large hanging screens combined with a powerful overhead sound system let everyone see the action and hear clearly.
The center opened in 2004 and replaced the older venue called The Kennel, which had served Gonzaga basketball for many years. It was built in less than two years using a design-build method that combined planning and construction simultaneously.
Fans call this place 'The Kennel' because of the fierce support and noise they bring to games. The student section, known as the Kennel Club, creates an intense atmosphere that visitors immediately feel when entering the arena.
The facility is easily accessible from downtown Spokane and offers good sight lines from every seat due to the steep seating arrangement. Arriving early for popular games is recommended, as events can fill to capacity quickly, especially when Gonzaga is playing important matches.
Beyond basketball, the venue hosts concerts and comedy shows, with artists like Ben Folds and bands such as Death Cab for Cutie having performed here. The arena also hosted NCAA women's basketball tournament games multiple times, bringing national attention and visitors to the city.
