Division Street Bridge, Road bridge in Downtown Spokane, Washington.
Division Street Bridge is a concrete bridge that crosses the Spokane River in downtown Spokane. The structure carries six travel lanes and has sidewalks running along both sides.
A wooden truss bridge built in 1882 was replaced by a steel structure in 1892, but that span collapsed in 1915 with five deaths. The current concrete bridge replaced it to provide a safer crossing.
The 1992 structure carries the name Senator Sam C. Guess Memorial Bridge, commemorating a local political figure through this transportation landmark.
Access to the Spokane River Centennial Trail is available beneath the bridge through two connection points for pedestrians and cyclists. These routes are easy to reach on foot or by bike.
During the 1894 flood, a displaced railroad bridge was swept by floodwaters and crashed into the Division Street structure. This impact damaged it and contributed to the later failure of that steel span.
