Snowshoe Peak

Snowshoe Peak is the highest summit in the Cabinet Mountains, featuring steep limestone cliffs and exposed ridges along its slopes. The mountain rises prominently above the surrounding terrain and creates a distinctive rocky outline when viewed from lower elevations.

The peak received official recognition as an Ultra summit, a designation for mountains with exceptional elevation prominence. This classification places it among an exclusive group of high-prominence mountains in the continental United States.

The peak serves as a training ground for technical mountaineers, requiring skills in route finding, rock climbing, and glacier travel across complex alpine terrain.

Visitors need substantial fitness and experience navigating steep terrain, as the approach involves technical rock climbing sections. Monitoring weather conditions is essential, and starting early allows time to descend before conditions become hazardous.

The northern face holds Blackwell Glacier, the last remaining named glacier in the Cabinet Mountains. This ice field serves as a remnant of the region's past glacial activity and draws the attention of those studying climate change effects.
