Grizzly Mountain, Mountain peak in Glacier National Park, British Columbia, Canada
Grizzly Mountain is a peak located in the Hermit Range of the Selkirk Mountains, rising about 57 kilometers northeast of Revelstoke. It reaches 2,754 meters in elevation and forms a prominent landmark in this rugged mountain terrain.
The first climbers reached the summit on August 31, 1901, via the southeast approach. This ascent by John E. Bushnell, August S. Eggers, Karl Schuluneggar, and Friedrich Michel marked the mountain's earliest recorded climbing success.
The Geographical Names Board of Canada selected the name Grizzly Mountain in 1906 due to its location above what was formerly known as Bear Creek.
Winter and early spring offer the best climbing conditions, as snow coverage makes water crossings and approach routes more manageable. Weather conditions and avalanche risk vary throughout the year, so check local conditions before planning a visit.
The mountain offers multiple climbing routes of varying difficulty, including a west ridge rated class 5.2. Georgia Engelhard and Ernest Feuz made the first ascent of this route in 1933, and it remains a popular alternative to the classic southeast approach.
