Mount Cleveland, Mountain summit in Glacier National Park, Montana
Mount Cleveland is the tallest peak in Glacier National Park, rising sharply above the surrounding valleys with dramatic rocky faces. The western side drops steeply, creating a distinctive profile that stands out when viewed from a distance.
The peak was named after President Grover Cleveland in the 1890s when the region became protected land. Climbers have regularly reached the summit since the early 1900s.
Frank B. Wynn accomplished the first recorded ascent of Mount Cleveland in 1920, establishing a mountaineering legacy in the northern section of Glacier National Park.
Climbing requires skill on rocky terrain and comfort with scrambling over loose stone. The best climbing season runs from July through September, when snow has melted and conditions are safest.
The mountain ranks 50th for topographic prominence in the contiguous United States, with its west flank rising over 5,500 feet in less than two miles.
