Francs Peak is a summit in the Absaroka Range with an elevation of 13,153 feet (4,010 m) and steep rocky cliffs. The slopes feature ancient pine forests, flowing mountain streams, and alpine meadows scattered across the terrain.
The peak bears the name of Otto Franc, a homesteader in the Big Horn Basin who played a role in the capture of outlaw Butch Cassidy during the 19th century. The mountain has carried this name since that era.
Native American petroglyphs carved into rocks near Francs Peak demonstrate the long-standing presence of indigenous peoples in this mountainous region.
The mountain is accessible via two main hiking routes: Meadow Creek Trail and Bear Creek Trail, both starting near the town of Meeteetse. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and weather protection, as conditions at elevation can change quickly.
This peak is the highest summit in the Absaroka Range and features eight sub-summits all exceeding 12,000 feet (3,658 m). This collection of high peaks makes it a notable mountain complex in the region.
