Ackley Lake State Park, State park in Judith Basin County, Montana.
Ackley Lake State Park is a 290-acre natural area centered around a 160-acre lake surrounded by low mountains in central Montana. The park sits between two ranges, the Little Belt Mountains to the west and the Snowy Mountains to the east.
The site originated as a private pond owned by Jean Ackley before being transformed into a larger reservoir in 1938 when a substantial earthen dam was constructed. This engineering project created the water body that would eventually become a public recreational area.
The park draws ice fishers during winter, when the frozen lake becomes a social hub with dozens of temporary shelters scattered across its surface. This seasonal tradition reflects how local communities use the water year-round.
The park provides around 26 campsites year-round with fire rings and picnic tables available on a first-come basis without needing to book ahead. Two boat ramps offer access to the water for fishing, swimming, and other activities.
The lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout that grow to modest sizes, attracting fishing enthusiasts across all seasons. This consistent management of fish populations keeps the water a reliable destination for anglers regardless of the time of year.
