Capitol, human settlement in Montana, United States of America
Capitol is an abandoned settlement in Montana situated in open, rocky terrain with pine forests and grasslands. The town consists of a few old stone buildings overshadowed by a distinctive white limestone formation called Capitol Rock, which resembles the Capitol building.
Capitol developed as a settlement during the early phase of European settlement in Montana in the 19th century, when pioneers and traders moved through the region. The town was gradually abandoned as economic activities shifted and people relocated to other areas.
Access is via rural Montana roads, and preparation and supplies are necessary since few services exist on site. Visitors should bring their own water and food and allow time for unhurried exploration.
Capitol Rock, the distinctive white limestone formation, takes its name from its resemblance to the Capitol building and is visible from great distances. This rock formation contains layers from the late Cretaceous and Miocene periods, revealing millions of years of Earth's history.
