Rearguard Falls, Waterfall observation point in Mount Robson Provincial Park, Canada
Rearguard Falls is a waterfall in Mount Robson Provincial Park where the Fraser River descends in a series of steps over rock formations. The site provides viewing areas from which visitors can watch the water rush downward.
The location has long been known as a natural obstacle for migrating salmon that must navigate the descent. This site has therefore held significance for both wildlife and human use of the river.
The park maintains partnerships with Indigenous groups to document and represent the traditional significance of this section of the Fraser River.
The location is easily reached by a trail from Highway 16, and safety railings protect viewing areas. The best time to visit is late spring and summer when the water flow is stronger.
The water often displays a milky-green color caused by glacial flour, which carries tiny rock particles from the mountains. This distinctive hue fades in autumn as glacial runoff decreases.
