Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples

Sacred Heart Church features Indigenous symbols throughout its interior, including the Medicine Wheel, Eagle motifs, and Native Way of the Cross installations.

The church opened on December 25, 1913, to serve Edmonton's growing population and became Canada's first National Indigenous parish in 1991.

The Sunday services incorporate Indigenous traditions with Catholic liturgy, including smudging ceremonies, drum performances, and traditional songs.

The church provides daily masses from Monday to Saturday at 9 AM, with three different Sunday services at 10 AM, 11:30 AM, and evening.

Pope Francis selected this church for his 2022 Penitential Pilgrimage of Reconciliation, emphasizing its role in Indigenous community healing.
