Notikewin Provincial Park

Notikewin Provincial Park is a nature reserve in northern Alberta where two rivers meet and flow through deep valleys. The landscape features steep riverbanks and forested terrain typical of the boreal region.

A trading post operated upstream from this location starting in 1866 and continued for several decades before river flooding destroyed it. The site marked the arrival of European fur traders in this remote region.

The name comes from a Cree word referencing conflict between indigenous groups in this territory. Walking through the park today, you experience the landscape that shaped these historical relationships.

The park has basic campsites located near the riverbanks with essential facilities like washrooms and boat access points. Plan for simple conditions and bring supplies since services are minimal.

The park is home to wolves and black bears roaming the remote valleys, animals you might occasionally spot if fortunate. Birdwatchers come here specifically to observe raptors and cranes that migrate through the river valleys.
