The post office opened in 1956 as Yellowknife expanded beyond its Old Town district and needed centralized postal infrastructure. This timing marked an important phase when the city required better communication links with distant regions.

The building is undergoing a name change to acknowledge its location on Yellowknives Dene territory, done in collaboration with First Nation Elders. This process reflects how community landmarks evolve to honor the land and people connected to them.
