Fort Supply, Military fort ruins in Woodward County, Oklahoma, US.
Fort Supply Historic District contains five original military buildings and a reconstructed stockade from the 1800s, situated on elevated ground near Fort Supply Lake. The complex includes an 1892 brick guardhouse that now displays military artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the site's operation.
The United States Army established this supply base in 1868 to support General Philip Sheridan's winter campaign against Southern Plains Indian tribes. After decades of military use, the property was transformed into a state facility in 1908 for new purposes.
The buildings show frontier military architecture, with the rare vertical log construction visible in the sergeant's quarters from 1875. Walking through the district, visitors can see how soldiers built and lived in these structures during their time here.
Plan to spend time walking through the buildings and examining the exhibits at a relaxed pace. The elevated location helps with orientation, and the guardhouse with its displays is a good place to start before exploring the other structures.
The site was converted from a military installation into Oklahoma's first state-operated mental health facility in 1908. This dramatic change in purpose shows how the buildings were adapted for entirely different functions and remains a surprising part of its past.
