Fort Larned National Historic Site, Military fort and historic site in Pawnee County, United States.
Fort Larned consists of nine restored sandstone buildings arranged around a central parade ground, representing a complete frontier military post.
The fort operated from 1859 to 1878 as a military outpost protecting traders and travelers along the Santa Fe Trail from conflicts with Native American tribes.
Fort Larned served as a governmental agency for administering relations with Central Plains Indian tribes under the Fort Wise Treaty of 1861.
The National Historic Site provides free admission, ranger-guided tours, and educational programs about military life and Native American relations during the 1860s.
The fort received its name from Colonel Benjamin F. Larned, the U.S. Army paymaster general, who never actually visited the installation during his lifetime.
