Provine Service Station
Provine Service Station, Historic filling station in Caddo County, US
Provine Service Station is a two-story Craftsman-style building with fuel pumps on the ground floor and residential quarters positioned above them. The structure blends functional design with living space, reflecting an era when such stations served dual purposes for operators and the community.
Built in 1929 by Carl Ditmore, the station was purchased by the Hamons family in 1941 and operated continuously until fuel services ended in 1986. It documents a chapter of American life when such stations were strategic roadside stops that adapted to changing transportation needs.
The station served as more than a fuel stop, functioning as a gathering place where travelers and local residents would meet to purchase supplies and exchange news.
The station is located roughly half a mile south of Hydro, Oklahoma and remains visible from the roadway. Since it now operates as a specialty store rather than a fuel stop, visitors should confirm opening times in advance, as hours may be limited.
Lucille Hamons operated the station for more than 50 years and frequently accepted valuable items as payment from travelers in need of fuel or food. This unconventional business practice reveals the personal relationships that formed at roadside stops during that era.
