J. T. Nickel Family Nature and Wildlife Preserve, Nature and wildlife preserve in Cherokee County, Oklahoma
The J.T. Nickel Family Nature and Wildlife Preserve is a nature reserve with 17,000 acres of forest, wetlands, and grassland along the Illinois River in eastern Oklahoma. The property contains three open walking trails, including Pine Ridge, Savannah, and Wetland trails, available for daily use.
The preserve was established in 2000 through a land donation from the John Nickel family. It became the largest privately owned conservation area in the Ozark Mountains.
The preserve is managed by the Nature Conservancy and uses controlled burns to restore the natural woodland landscape that existed here before settlement. Visitors can observe changing vegetation patterns that result from this active management approach.
The walking trails are accessible daily and offer different difficulty levels for various abilities. Visitors should bring suitable footwear and water, especially during warmer seasons.
The property contains seven distinct vegetation zones with roughly 600 documented plant species. Included among these are 15 rare and endangered species found within the regional landscape.
