The institution began operations in 1961 during the Kansas Centennial Celebration and relocated to its current location at the Wichita Boathouse after previous establishments in other parts of the city.
The museum exhibits Olympic medals, jerseys from professional athletes, and the Governor's Cup trophy that symbolizes the rivalry between Kansas State University and University of Kansas.
The museum operates through funding from donations, admissions, gift shop sales, and special events, with new members inducted each fall during an annual ceremony.
The basketball section features materials from James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, alongside exhibits of 273 inducted individuals who shaped Kansas sports history.
