Orpheum Theatre, Historic theatre in downtown Wichita, United States.
The Orpheum Theatre is a movie theater and performance venue in downtown Wichita, built in the Mission Revival style using brick. The seven-story building contains a large main auditorium and office spaces on the upper floors.
The building was designed by architect John Eberson in 1922, originally to host vaudeville shows. Over the following decades it adapted to different forms of entertainment before being recognized as a historic landmark.
The Orpheum hosts ballet, live music, comedy, and classic film screenings through the year, drawing a wide range of audiences. On any given night, the main hall fills with a mix of longtime regulars and first-time visitors discovering the space.
The theater sits on Broadway Avenue in central Wichita and is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding blocks. Guided tours of the building are available for those who want to see the space outside of a scheduled event.
John Eberson was one of the first architects to develop the concept of the atmospheric theater, where interiors were designed to feel like outdoor venues. The Orpheum was among his early works before that approach spread widely across the United States.
