Port of Bridgetown, Main seaport in Bridgetown, Barbados
The Port of Bridgetown is a modern harbor facility with twelve berths where ships of different sizes can dock. The facility spans about 90 acres and handles large volumes of containerized cargo each year.
The port was built between 1956 and 1961 by a British construction company and was created by building an artificial causeway across a coastal waterway. This approach allowed a modern harbor to be established at this location.
The terminal building is filled with small shops arranged like traditional local houses, where you can find items such as rum and leather goods made in Barbados. These shops shape the feeling of the place and show what matters to the local economy.
The port offers various services including customs, immigration, and health checks that are important for passengers and crew members. There is also a post office and free internet access available for anyone in the terminal.
The harbor earned recognition as the safest port in the Caribbean in 2011 and works with other major ports in the region. This partnership helps maintain it as a key shipping hub in the Caribbean.
