Temple des Pythons

Temple des Pythons, Voodoo shrine in Ouidah, Benin.

Description

The Temple of Pythons is a sacred site in Ouidah centered on a circular clay structure with a traditional roof that houses over sixty royal pythons. The complex features several rooms and areas for the snakes as well as spaces for visitors to observe the animals at close range.

History

The sanctuary was founded in 1717 after a local king honored pythons as protectors in battle and established structures to house them. This bond between the snakes and the local ruler has persisted over the centuries and continues to shape the site today.

Culture

The pythons are revered as sacred beings and play a central role in the daily rituals and ceremonies of the place. Visitors can observe how the priests treat the snakes with great respect, viewing them as spiritual connections between people and Vodun forces.

Practical

The site is easy to reach and located near the center of Ouidah, with friendly guides who lead visitors around and provide explanations. The best time to visit is during daylight hours when the snakes are active and clearly visible.

Did you know?

The pythons in the temple follow their natural hunting instincts and are fed live prey once a week, which visitors sometimes witness firsthand. This behavior shows that the snakes live genuinely wild lives despite their sacred role.
