Museum of contemporary art in Ouidah

The Museum of Contemporary Art occupies Villa Ajavon, a 1922 building distinguished by beige facades and numerous windows across its various levels. The space houses rotating exhibitions featuring artworks in multiple mediums and artistic approaches.

The museum opened in 2013 and became the first contemporary art institution on the African continent. The founding followed extensive restoration work that preserved the historic building's original character.

The museum displays works by artists from across Africa in rotating exhibitions that change throughout the year. Visitors can experience photography, paintings, sculptures, and installations that reflect contemporary African artistic voices.

The museum welcomes visitors on most days of the week without charging admission fees. The venue includes an art shop for purchasing works and a dining area for refreshment and rest.

The collection includes photographs by Malick Sidibé from the 1970s that capture everyday moments in his studio practice. Self-portraits by Samuel Fosso are also featured, exploring themes of identity and personal presentation through the camera lens.
