Historical Museum of Abomey

The Historical Museum of Abomey occupies two former royal palaces within a 40-hectare complex, displaying over 1,050 artifacts from the Dahomey kingdom.

The museum, established in 1943 by French colonial administration, preserves the legacy of twelve kings who ruled the Dahomey kingdom from the 17th to early 20th century.

The collection includes wooden thrones, metal altars, royal insignias, weapons, and textiles that document the traditions of the Fon people and Dahomey civilization.

Located 65 miles from the Gulf of Guinea, the museum maintains exhibits across multiple buildings within the Royal Palaces complex of Abomey.

The museum walls feature 50 restored bas-reliefs that record historical events and military victories through traditional Fon artistic techniques.
