Marché

Marché is a large trading center that connects merchants from Cotonou's port to northern Benin and ranks as the fourth largest commercial hub in the country. The marketplace spreads across multiple sections filled with stalls selling farm produce, dried goods, and locally made food items.

The marketplace was founded in the 17th century following a dispute between brothers Zanvoh and Dako-Donou, who established this trading location. This founding set the stage for what would eventually grow into a key junction between southern and northern Benin.

The name Gbohicon refers to the history of sheep trading in this area, and you will notice that live goats are not sold here due to local spiritual beliefs that visitors should respect.

This market opens every five days and offers farm products along with locally made foods like corn variations and specialized sauces. It makes sense to visit during active market days and arrive with time to explore the different product zones.

The marketplace developed around a railway station, transforming Bohicon from a small district into a major commercial hub for goods traveling between regions. This railway connection was essential in shaping the market into the trading crossroads it is today.
