Aristides Pereira International Airport, airport
Aristides Pereira International Airport is the main airport on the island of Boa Vista in Cape Verde, handling international passenger and cargo flights. The terminal building is laid out to process arriving and departing travelers and connects the island mainly to European and other African island routes.
Boa Vista's airport developed as tourism on the island started to grow from the 1990s onward. Its expansion followed the rise of resort development along the island's coastline, making it a key entry point for visitors.
The airport is named after Aristides Pereira, the first president of Cape Verde after independence. Travelers passing through the terminal often see references to his role in the country's history on display.
The terminal is located outside Sal Rei, the main town on the island, and is reached by a direct road from there. The airport handles many charter flights, so check-in and departure areas can get crowded, and it is worth arriving with time to spare.
Boa Vista is one of the flattest and driest islands in the archipelago, and leaving the terminal gives an immediate sense of that open, sandy landscape. The contrast between the airport building and the dunes and desert sand just beyond it is one of the first things arriving visitors tend to notice.
