Makronissos Tombs

Makronissos Tombs is an ancient burial site with nineteen stone chambers carved directly from rock, each containing a rectangular trench down the middle. Three stone benches line the walls of each chamber to accommodate multiple burials.

The tombs date to the Hellenistic and Roman periods and were excavated between 1989 and 1990. These discoveries reveal how this location served as a burial ground over multiple centuries.

The tombs show how people honored their dead by placing them in clay coffins arranged with care on stone benches. Visitors can observe the thoughtful layout that reflects burial customs from centuries ago.

Visitors reach the site via stepped pathways that lead to the chamber entrances, which were once sealed with large stone slabs. The layout is easy to navigate, allowing you to explore each chamber at your own pace.

Some chambers feature carved alcoves opposite the entrance, with one room large enough for up to five separate burials. This adaptable design shows how builders customized each tomb for different family needs.
