Makronissos Tombs, Ancient burial site in Agia Napa, Cyprus
The Makronissos Tombs consist of nineteen rock-cut chambers with rectangular trenches in the center and three benches along the sides for internments.
The excavation of these tombs, conducted between November 1989 and January 1990, revealed structures dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
The deceased individuals were placed in clay sarcophagi covered with three flat tiles, following the traditional Greek burial practices of the period.
The archaeological site features stepped pathways leading to rectangular entrances that were originally sealed with large calcarenite stone slabs.
Some tombs contain additional carved spaces opposite the entrance, with one chamber designed to accommodate up to five separate internments.
