Lukunor, Atoll municipality in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia
Lukunor is an atoll forming part of the Nomoi Islands group, located about 264 kilometers southeast of the main Chuuk islands in the Pacific Ocean. Several small islands surround a protected lagoon at the center of the atoll.
The atoll came into contact with Europeans in 1528 when Spanish explorer Alvaro de Saavedra encountered the islands during an expedition returning to New Spain. This encounter marked the beginning of European presence in the region.
The inhabitants of Lukunor maintain traditional fishing practices, demonstrated by their specialized techniques for capturing large schools of migratory tiil fish.
The region experiences consistent warm temperatures year-round, ranging from 24 to 32 degrees Celsius, with higher rainfall from March through December. Visitors should prepare for humid conditions and bring waterproof gear.
The atoll features a ring-shaped coral reef encircling an inner lagoon, creating a sheltered area for local fishing activities. This natural formation allows residents to benefit from stable and abundant fish populations.
