Faraulep, Coral atoll in Yap State, Micronesia
Faraulep is a coral atoll in Yap State consisting of three main islands surrounding a central lagoon. The enclosed waters span several square kilometers and create an isolated ecosystem within the western Caroline Islands.
Spanish navigator Juan Rodriguez first documented the atoll in 1696, beginning an era of colonial control by multiple powers. Germany, Japan, and the United States subsequently administered the territory until the Federated States of Micronesia gained autonomy.
Residents practice traditional navigation methods using stone markers that have guided ocean travel for generations. These techniques remain central to how people understand and move through their surrounding waters.
Getting there requires flying to Yap International Airport followed by several hours of boat travel through the western Caroline Islands. Weather conditions over the water can be rough, so visitors should bring waterproof clothing and seasickness remedies.
The atoll has three narrow channels on its southern border that allow small boats to enter the inner lagoon. These natural passages are essential for local fishing and the daily activities of residents.
