Ifalik, Coral atoll in Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia
Ifalik is a coral atoll in Yap State with four main islands named Ella, Elangelap, Rawaii, and Flalap. These islands enclose a lagoon that is home to different marine life and is surrounded by reefs.
Before European contact, Ifalik was known as a warrior island and conducted military campaigns against neighboring atolls like Lamotrek and Faraulep. These fighting skills shaped its early history and made it a noted force in the region.
The people here maintain traditional dances with abstract movements that differ from Polynesian styles. These dance forms remain part of everyday cultural life and are performed at gatherings.
Getting here requires specific transportation arrangements through Guam or other Micronesian locations and access is limited. Lodging options are scarce on the islands and visitors should arrange plans ahead of time.
The lagoon in the center is home to various species of reef fish and invertebrates that are rarely found in other Pacific atolls. This isolated setting has developed distinct ecosystems.
