Sørvágur, Village on the island of Vágar, Faroe Islands
Sørvágur is a small village on the island of Vágar in the Faroe Islands, sitting along the shore of Sørvágsfjørður fjord. Colorful houses line the waterfront, and the harbor holds fishing boats alongside salmon farming pens floating in the fjord.
Remains of a Viking farm found in Sørvágur show that people settled here around a thousand years ago, farming animals and fishing the surrounding waters. During the Second World War, British forces built an airport, roads, and a harbor here, changing the village in ways that lasted well beyond the war.
Vágar Airport sits right next to the village, so planes fly low overhead as you walk through the streets. The area is easy to cover on foot or by car, and the harbor is a natural starting point for boat trips to nearby islands.
From a cliff above the village called Trælanípa, the nearby lake Sørvágsvatn appears to float above the ocean, an optical effect that surprises many first-time visitors. The lake ends in a waterfall called Bøsdalafossur, which drops directly into the sea below.
