Drangarnir, Sea stacks formation between Vágar Island and Tindholmur, Faroe Islands
Drangarnir consists of two massive rock pillars towering around 70 meters from the sea and connected by a striking arch formation. The rocks sit between Vágar and Tindholmur, creating a dramatic ocean landscape that continuously shifts as waves and wind wear away at the stone.
The rock formation developed millions of years ago when volcanic activity created the foundation for these structures. Since then, relentless wave action and erosion have continuously sculpted the stone into the distinctive shapes visible today.
Local inhabitants named the formations Stóri Drangur and Lítli Drangur, meaning Large Sea Stack and Small Sea Stack in the Faroese language respectively.
To see Drangarnir, you need to book a guided boat tour departing from Sørvágur village, with trips depending on weather conditions. Plan time for travel and check the season, as rough conditions often prevent tours from operating.
The top of the rock arch is covered in grass, creating a green crown effect that sets it apart from other coastal rock formations. This verdant covering creates a striking contrast with the dark stone beneath and gives the place a changing appearance throughout the seasons.
