Pohuwato

Pohuwato is an administrative regency in Gorontalo spanning approximately 4,200 square kilometers of coastal, rural, and agricultural areas across northern Sulawesi. The region is divided into thirteen districts, with Marisa functioning as the main economic and administrative center.

The region was formally established as a separate entity in 2003 when it split from Boalemo Regency through legal action. This created a new administrative structure with Marisa designated as its capital.

The region's communities rely on traditional administrative divisions that shape how daily life is organized and decisions are made. These structures connect small villages to larger urban centers through established social networks.

The region contains several community centers distributed across its territory, including areas like Buntulia, Dengilo, and Lemito. Most services and facilities are concentrated in Marisa, making it the practical hub for visitors and residents.

In 2023, tensions in Marisa centered on local mining disputes and land rights raised by residents seeking recognition of ancestral claims. This event highlighted how community voices can reshape regional governance and public priorities.
