Bengkalis, Administrative regency in Riau, Indonesia
Bengkalis is an administrative regency in Riau comprising Bengkalis Island, Rupat Island, and portions of eastern Sumatra. The region stretches along the Malacca Strait and is divided into eleven administrative districts.
The regency was established in 1956 and experienced major territorial changes in 1999 when neighboring areas separated into new administrative divisions. This restructuring created regencies such as Rokan Hilir and Siak.
Local communities maintain traditions shaped by the Sakai people, visible in ceremonies and celebrations throughout the year. These customs remain woven into daily life and social gatherings across the region.
The region has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round and heavy rainfall, especially from September to November. Visitors should be prepared for wet conditions during the rainy season and dress lightly for the heat and humidity.
The southern areas contain the Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve, an important conservation area in the region. The northern sections are shaped by oil, rubber, and coconut production, creating a different economic landscape.
