North Halmahera

North Halmahera Regency spans 3,404 square kilometers on Halmahera Island, featuring coastal areas, mountains, and numerous small islands along its shores.

The region served as a strategic base during World War II, with both Japanese and American forces establishing positions across the territory in 1944.

The indigenous population consists of Tobelorese, Galelarese, and Lolodarese groups, each maintaining their traditional languages alongside Indonesian as the official language.

The administrative center, Tobelo, connects to other districts through a palm-lined coastal road and receives air traffic at Kau Airport, 60 kilometers from the city.

Marine surveys in the waters surrounding North Halmahera documented 803 species of reef fish, making it a significant location within the Coral Triangle.
