Princess Grace Irish Library, Literary center in Monaco City, Monaco
The Princess Grace Irish Library is a literary center in Monaco City housing approximately twelve thousand volumes, including works from the Irish Literary Revival and classical Irish texts. The collection ranges from fiction and poetry to reference materials focused on Irish culture and history.
Prince Rainier III opened the library on November 20, 1984, as a tribute to the Princess, who had Irish ancestry in County Mayo. This project grew from a recognition of her family ties to the Irish island.
The library displays portraits of Princess Grace created by different artists such as Mohamed Drisi, Jack Yeats, Louis le Brocquy, and Jack Murray. These artworks shape the space and reflect her connection to Irish artistic traditions.
The library is located on rue Princesse Marie-de-Lorraine and opens Monday through Friday for visitors. Guided visits are available for smaller groups, making it easy to fit a stop into your day.
The collection includes books from the Princess's personal library as well as Irish-American sheet music and historical photographs. These personal items offer insight into her passion for Irish culture beyond her public role.
