Lake Hallstatt spans 8.55 square kilometers with mountain faces rising from its shores, reaching depths of 125 meters in the crystal waters.
The lake has served as a vital transportation route since the 13th century, supporting salt mining operations and establishing Austria's first industrial pipeline in 1596.
Traditional wooden flat-bottom boats called Fuhren, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, represent centuries of navigation methods on the lake.
Multiple beach resorts around the lake provide swimming areas, with dedicated facilities in Hallstatt, Bad Goisern, and Obertraun for summer activities.
The lake maintains the only winter-operating ship line in Austria, connecting Hallstatt Market to the railway station since 1881.
