Zittauer Hütte is a mountain shelter located at about 2330 meters in the Wildgerlostal valley, situated beside an alpine lake. The building overlooks the peaks of the Reichenspitzgruppe mountains and provides sleeping space for around 66 people across seven simple rooms.
This mountain shelter was founded in 1901 by the Austrian Alpine Club to provide lodging for mountaineers in this remote area. It developed as a base for explorers venturing into the westernmost valley region of Hohe Tauern National Park.
This mountain shelter is where hikers and mountaineers gather and experience Alpine hospitality firsthand. Local Pinzgau cuisine is served here, reflecting the eating traditions and daily life of this mountain region.
This shelter is open from June to October and can be reached via hiking trails from Finkau-Alpe. Visitors should expect basic conditions and bring warm clothing, as the altitude and weather can change rapidly.
In the early 2000s this shelter earned an environmental certificate for sustainable management and efforts to conserve resources. This recognition was uncommon for mountain huts at the time and demonstrated commitment to responsible mountain stewardship.
