Altausseer See

Altausseer See is an alpine lake in Austria surrounded by steep mountain walls and known for its clear waters. The shoreline features wooded areas and open access points, while the deeper water takes on a deep blue color that reflects the surrounding peaks.

The lake formed roughly 16,000 years ago through glacial movements that carved deep basins in the Totes Gebirge mountains. This massive geological transformation shaped the landscape visible to visitors today.

The Daffodil Festival takes place at Lake Altaussee every third year, establishing itself as the largest flower celebration in Austria.

Visitors can walk around the shoreline or find swimming areas from various access points, especially during warmer months. Boat trips are available through regular ferry services, including electric-powered options for those seeking quieter rides.

The lake is fed primarily by hidden karst springs at its bottom, which keep the water remarkably clear throughout the year. These underground sources make it a hydrologically distinctive feature of the region.
