Furkajoch, Mountain pass in Laterns, Austria
Furkajoch is a mountain pass in Vorarlberg, Austria, sitting at 1,759 feet (1,759 m) and linking the valley of Laterns with the Bregenzerwald region. The road winds through open alpine terrain and is the only direct route between these two areas.
Before a paved road was built, the communities on both sides of the pass were largely cut off from each other. The construction opened up regular movement of goods and people between the two valleys for the first time.
The pass is a known destination for road cyclists who come for the steep gradients and the alpine setting. On warm weekends, riders from across the region gather here to share the climb together.
The road through the pass closes in winter and reopens when conditions allow in spring. Checking the weather before heading up is a good idea, as alpine conditions can shift quickly even in summer.
The first two kilometers of the climb hit a 14 percent gradient right from the start, making the opening stretch one of the hardest parts of the whole route. Many riders who underestimate this early section find themselves in difficulty before they even reach the upper slopes.
