Naturpark Almenland, Nature park in Styria, Austria
Naturpark Almenland is a nature park spreading across Eastern Styria's alpine region, containing about 125 working alpine pastures between several mountain peaks. The area brings together green mountain meadows, traditional mountain lodges, and expansive grasslands that are actively grazed by cattle.
The pastures developed over generations through farmer work managing alpine meadows, which shaped the landscape we see today. This farming tradition has defined the practices on which the region still relies.
The park hosts the Styrian Chamber Music Festival, bringing classical performances together with traditional mountain hut singers and folk music gatherings. These events reveal how music is woven into the daily life and identity of those living in these mountains.
The park features marked cycling and hiking paths that link various mountain lodges, with e-bike charging stations available throughout. Winter months bring snow sports options, though checking weather conditions beforehand helps ensure a safe visit.
The area holds one of Europe's largest connected alpine pasture systems, where around 3000 cattle graze and actively shape the landscape. These animals also produce the regional ALMO beef, which comes from this traditional grazing practice.
