Solsteinhaus, Mountain hut in Zirl, Austria.
Solsteinhaus is a mountain hut at 1806 meters elevation in the western Karwendel Alps. It provides sleeping space for roughly 40 people in beds plus an additional 60 on mattresses, with basic facilities for lodging and meals.
The hut was built in 1912 and became an alpine refuge for the region. After operating for many decades, it underwent a complete renovation in 2007, receiving new heating, water systems, and other essential updates.
The hut serves as a meeting point for climbers and hikers exploring the surrounding peaks and valleys. Visitors experience the simple mountain hospitality typical of alpine shelters, where people gather to rest and share stories from their journeys.
The hut is reached by a hiking trail from Hochzirl railway station, which takes several hours on foot. A material cable installed in 1972 helps transport supplies and equipment uphill, making the logistics much easier.
In June 2006, a brown bear was spotted near the hut, a rare occurrence for this region. The sighting was remarkable because bears had not been seen in the Alps for many years.
