Malta Hydroelectric Power Station is a pumped-storage facility nestled high in the Austrian Alps that moves water back and forth between two mountain lakes. The underground power station harnesses this water movement to generate electricity during periods of high demand and pumps it back uphill when energy is abundant and cheap.
Construction of the power station began in 2010, with the underground cavern completed in 2011 and full operation starting in 2015. The project required extensive rock excavation deep in the mountains to create a hidden facility beneath the Alpine landscape.
