Clifton Beach

Clifton Beach is a sandy shore along the Coral Sea in Victoria, bordered by the Macallister Range mountains to the west. The narrow strip is protected by rocky groynes that help prevent coastal erosion.

The beach faced ongoing threats from natural coastal erosion until protective measures were implemented through rocky groyne installations. These structures mark a turning point in modern management of the shoreline.

The beach sits on traditional land of the Djabugay people, an Aboriginal group with deep historical roots in this coastal region. Visitors can sense the cultural importance of the place through the landscape and the stories woven into the area.

Tides significantly affect how much sand is visible, so visitors should check tide schedules before planning a beach visit. High tide makes the beach much narrower, while low tide opens up more space to explore.

At peak high tide, nearly all visible sand can disappear beneath the water, creating a dramatically transformed landscape that changes multiple times throughout the day. This daily occurrence makes each visit feel like a different experience.
